Horrorhound Weekend Columbus 2012

Every horror fan out there should hit up some kind of horror convention in their life time. I got hooked on my very first one and now I try to hit up as many horror cons as I can though out the year.

Horrorhound Columbus was the first Horrorhound of the year, The first Horrorhound in Columbus, and The first Horrorhound I attended. Right off the bat I will say that Horrorhound Weekend was a blast. I was only there for one day but it was one great day. The show is quite large with 2 big vendor rooms and a lot of great horror guests from some of my favorite movies.

There were so many guests at this show that I wanted to meet but unfortunately I didn’t have the time or money to meet them all. I did however use my money and time wisely to meet the guests that I was most excited to see. My first and main objective was to meet Danielle Harris (Halloween 4 & 5, Rob Zombies Halloween). As a huge fan of the Halloween series I was very excited to meet Danielle. I love the Halloween series and my favorite Halloween girl has to be Jamie Lloyd from Halloween 4 and 5. I brought my limited edition Halloween 4 DVD to be signed, which is now one of my favorite items in my collection. She was super nice and I hope to see her again at more cons in the future. I also met the horror master Stuart Gordon (Director of Re-Animator) and Lynn Lowry (I Drink Your Blood, The Crazies). Their were SO MANY other great guests at this convention that I didn’t get to meet but would have loved to, please check out the upcoming Horrorhound shows and if you can make it GO TO IT!

Horrorhound Weekend was packed and filled with people and all things horror. I found a lot of good movies, shirts, and anything horror related at this show. I am going to have to stay for a whole weekend at the next Horrorhound show I make it to because I barely got to experience everything they had to offer at this show.

The Innkeepers

I recommend all horror fans check out Ti West's new movie THE INNKEEPERS.
I have been seeing a lot of people out there judging this movie very hard and giving it a bunch of crap I don't think it deserves. I can't say weather or not you are going to enjoy or hate this movie but as a long time horror fan I really thought this was a great movie. and very creepy.

The Innkeepers relies heavily on atmosphere, suspense, and creepy imagery rather than gore and intensity. For me this is a big relief to see a GOOD modern horror movie not depend on gore and shock and pull it off well. I don't mind, and actually really enjoy a good gore fest, but my favorite movies are ones that pull off a good scare on pure atmosphere and suspense.
I give mega props to Sara Paxton who played the main character Clair. She did a great job and her character added just enough quirky humor to the movie to balance with the creepiness while not making the movie goofy.

I will admit this movie starts off slow and stays slow for a while. To me this is not a bad thing at all. It only adds more and more to the character development and gives the viewer more time to take in the scenery and become familiar with the location.

Check this movie out in a near by theater if possible, or check out the DVD or Blu Ray in April!

The Sleeper

I recently watched THE SLEEPER from GAMMA KNIFE FILMS.

This movie was just released this week but takes place in 1981 so it has a good 80’s throwback slasher feel to it. I really like to support new independent movies like this that use techniques of the gold old days of horror. As I was watching THE SLEEPER scenes from movies like Black Christmas and House on Sorority Row were going through my head. While this film is not very original it still has its moments and I feel was defiantly worth the buy.

THE SLEEPER has a very classic sorority house slasher theme to it. The killer is shown right off the bat. There is no mystery or “who done it” type things going on just a maniac trying to kill some college girls. There is not much background given as to who this guy is or why he is killing but I must say the actor did a very good job as the killer in this movie, I would say he is what kept this movie going.

Another thing I really enjoyed about this movie is that there were no scenes that seemed to be intentionally goofy. The movie has a serious tone the whole time. The acting was good enough I thought, Especially by the main actress that played the character Amy.

To the gore hounds out there this movie could seem boring, it really all depends on what kind of movies you go for. There are plenty of deaths, some are repetitive, some have a decent amount of gore, but this movie drives more on suspense and creepiness than anything else.

I think more could have been done with the storyline of this movie. I was always waiting for some kind of twist as I was watching but I still think THE SLEEPER is a good movie. This was a solid flick and I would much rather see releases like this than bad Hollywood remakes and prequels. This is a fine independent horror release.

For the Collectors out there!

I got a Limited Edition of THE SLEEPER that included the DVD a VHS and a cool flyer for a sorority party that was in the movie. 100 copies of this edition were made but GAMMA KNIFE FILMS announced  they would be making more so if you are interested snag it now because I read that the goal was to only make 500. The Box that holds the DVD and VHS looks great and has some fake wear and tear to make it look more like an old 80’s rental movie. Even a fake horror genre sticker is on the front of the box and a please rewind sticker is places on the VHS tape.
It is really cool to see editions like this for the die hard horror fans coming out. Check this out and Snag the DVD or box set from GAMMA KNIFE FILMS.

Female Prisoner #701 Scorpion

A Woman Betrayed and Imprisoned. A Mission of Vengeance.

Female Prisoner #701 Scorpion is a Japanese exploitation film that involves women in prison, punishment, and revenge. This was my first time diving into this particular exploitation sub genre and I came out a fan of the genre and a big fan of the main actress Meiko Kaji. The main story involves a woman who was betrayed by the man she loves and wrongly accused of a crime. She does all she can to escape the prison and get her revenge.

This film turned me into a Meiko Kaji fan. She does an amazing job with the character Nami Matsushim or
“Mastu the Scorpion”. She communicates  more with intense vengeful stares rather than words to create a serious kick ass character. The movie also has some decent action scenes, uncomfortable scenes of punishment, and some very nice visual moments. I will defiantly be checking out the sequels and other Meiko Kaji movies.

I wouldn’t call this a horror film, but it is a good 70’s exploitation flick that sprays the blood and has its fair share of brutal scenes. If you want to check this out there is a Tokyo Shock DVD that should be quite easy to find online.
